even a few reports of severe weather, whether it be in montgomery, washington county, frederick county, also possible funnel reported by an officer near sandy point. so possibly there was a funnel near the area. nonetheless, we did have some strong storms that brought down some trees. as we look at hd doppler, we can see that front finally moving off shore. rain showers still left along the lower eastern shore including rain right now in ocean city, but it has cleared out as you look across southern maryland, baltimore, even in the western start of the state. this is all changing now as we get throughout the day. that front is heading off shore. we are looking for beautiful conditions. currently around 60 degrees. we're moving for high temperatures up near 80. you're gonna wake up to clouds and a few showers across the lower eastern shore. and cooling skies, winds out of the northwest today around 7 to 12 miles per hour. loving this dryer air. it's going to be a lot cooler into the coming night. we'll have details in just a few

minutes. we begin with storms that moved through, not just our area, but all in washington, d.c. and virginia. >> the storms left behind a number of power outages in our viewing area. around 15,000 customers lost power. they are working to restore service. so far crews have restored power to over 14,000 customers. at last check, over 600 remain without power this morning. take a look at this picture. a water spout on the chesapeake was sent to us by viewer alex schweitzer. we're told one police officer at sandy point state park spotted a funnel cloud. his cruiser was damaged in the storm, but he was not hurt. during the storm in prince georges county, more than a dozen people were injured as they rushed for the exits at that time show arena, where a county fair was being held. strong winds and heavy rain plowed through washington, d.c. knocking out power and prompting unconfirmed tornado reports. workers were cleaning up fallen trees and trying to repair power lines. reports of tornado-like funnel

clouds were reported in fairfax county and virginia, but actual tornados have not been confirmed. >> you mentioned virginia. northern virginia was also hit with severe weather saturday afternoon. fairfax county officials confirm a tornado touched down around 4:00. the national weather service is investigating trees, traffic lights and power lines were toppled. nearly 150,000 customers lost power. in arlington county, more than 1,000 people were enjoying a concert of the 22nd annual rosalynn jazz festival, where they got a warning to evacuate. vendors frantically tried to pack up and find shelter. >> next thing you know, bam. it just hit. came and told us to pack up. next thing we know -- >> literally hit it. tables flying, chairs, merchandise, people running. >> we're told one person was injured when a stage at the

festival collapsed. a reminder, you can always track storms anywhere you are. try our i phone app if you seek interactive radar in full screen. an off duty hartford county police officer was killed after falling to his death from interstate 95. he worked as a canine officer for the aberdeen police officer. it comes after the death of a sheriff's deputy. >> the aberdeen police department is mourning the loss of one of their own. hess killed in what the department describe as a freak accident, a freak accident that's rocked this hartford county community. >> he should be remembered as a really good guy. >> according to police who are investigating the case, the off duty officer was travelling with 10 or 11 family members and friends in a limousine type bus early saturday morning. a spokes person said the bus was returning from washington, d.c. when it suddenly pulled over on

the shoulder of northbound i 95 near the russell street exit in downtown baltimore. authorities tell 11 news at some point he got out of the vehicle and somehow ended up falling off this ramp about a 47 foot fall to his death into this wooded area. >> i can't believe it. >> joy scott of bel air lived next door to the family for almost two years before the family moved out a few weeks ago. scott's four children adore the officer, who they call mr. charles. >> a great police officer. someone i could tell. great, great neighbor. i mean, upstairs, other people in this neighborhood that are very upset by what happened. >> armata is the second police officer to die this week. on thursday, hartford county corp recall charles macano died in a car accident on his way home from work. armato was a husband and the father of a young girl who, according to the department, turns 1 on monday.

>> the cause of the death is still under investigation this morning. we're told funeral arrangements are being made. in downtown baltimore, hundreds of loyal ravens fans expressed outpouring of love and adoration to art modell. it was a fitting place to remember the man who moved the browns to baltimore after the colts left. >> welsh fans say they're grateful that the modell family invited them here to say their final good-byes to the man who brought pro football back to baltimore. not the way it usually does on any given sunday. ♪ >> frank sinatra played over the loud speakers as thousands of loyal fans made their way to the 50 yard line. fans gave their condolences to the modell family as they walked by his casket. the lombardi trophy that modell pulled up after the ravens won the super bowl in 2001.

>> we miss baltimore football. it's great to have him back. >> gates opened up at 11, but john ryan was the first one in line just before 8 a.m. >> i thought there would be a big crowd here this time of the morning, but i guess they'll come in later, you know? but, i had to come down okay from hart county and show my support for mr. modell and his family. >> like many ravens fans, ryan is grateful for what modell has done for baltimore. >> he brought the action back for baltimore. >> i'm gonna miss him. i had chance to meet him years ago. i'm gonna miss him. i'm so glad we had an opportunity to be here and send his farewells off. >> art's son david modell said his father would have been proud of the tribute, but also a little embarrassed by it. david said the outpouring of support means a lot to the entire family. >> you can imagine for any family who loses their father or

any loved one, how difficult it is. and to be soothed by thousands of broader family members makes me feel like i could float off the door. >> i don't think he would want us to be sad. he would want us to continue to bring that ball home. we're gonna do it. we're gonna do it. purple pride. purple pride. >> there will be a series of tributes to art modell at monday's home opener and he will be laid to rest on tuesday. wbal, tv 11 news. police are investigating an early morning shooting in northwest baltimore. officers were called to the 2500 block of edge comb circle north just before 2:00 saturday morning. that's where police found a man who had been shot multiple times. the victim was taken to an area hospital and is expected to survive. just before 2:30 saturday morning, officers heard gunshots coming from the 300 block of

gold strait. there, officers found two men who had been shot. both victims were taken to area hospitals. one of the victims maurice mccoy who died from his injuries. the other victim is expected to survive. with less than two months before election day, the campaign trail is heating up. president obama was in florida as republican presidential candidate mitt romney made stops in virginia, each looking to ride a wave of post encourage enthusiasm to victory. here's brian moore with this morning's commitment 2012 report. >> in florida, president obama was basking in the post convention glow. >> our friends at their convention, they were more than happy to talk about everything they think is wrong with america. but they didn't say much about how they'd make it right. >> even as i took a swipe at

now your 11 insta weather plus forecast. >> good morning. we're starting you off with a look from hd doppler. we can still see what's left over of that storm system that moved through yesterday. now the rain showers just starting to push off shore. it's still raining in ocean city, though that rain is pretty light in nature. nothing compared to what we saw yesterday, as we had several reports of downed trees because of those strong storms. even possibly a funnel near sandy point. that was reported by a police officer. skies are clearing out. and we're expecting some very nice weather to come in behind this front. but first i do want to talk about the tropics, something that's been active over the past couple of weeks. we still have leslie, a tropical storm now, but very large storm system.

in fact, the tropical storm force winds have extended out 200 miles just north of leslie. here we have hamilton in bermuda. this is going to be impacted by leslie throughout the day although the storm is likely to track off the east. you can see how they're getting a lot of the outer bands from the storm. also strong winds. winds reported up to 50 to 60 miles per hour possible today. leslie likely to track up north. maybe strengthening back into a hurricane as she continues north over the waters. as for hurricane michael, still a category two, likely to decrease strength as he stays out in the open atlantic. fortunately, we're not expecting any impact to the u.s. with these two storms. the one thing we have to watch for today is bermuda, as leslie passes by. all the clouds along the coast, the clearing out towards the west, this is going to be a very nice we wither this pattern coming in through the next couple days. right now high pressure is building in in its place. but we still have a lot of clouds associated with the upper low.

that's going to bring some rain showers to the western mountains. there's a second reinforcing cold front moving in to the east. that's gonna continue to bring in that dry, pleasant air. talking about very nice weather into the next couple of days. look at temperatures coming in behind it. that second front. 43 as we head up into northern minnesota. 54 just towards minneapolis. 48 degrees in south dakota. so very cool air coming in behind this. it's the first taste of fall for much of the nation. 62 at bwi thurgood marshall. low 50s in the western part of the state. bit of a chilly start to the day. highs in the mountains, upper 60s. we have chance of the rain showers. otherwise beautiful in baltimore. 79 with clearing skies. maybe some showers this morning in ocean city that even may clear out. tonight, a bit of a chilly one, dropping down to about 60 downtown but 50s as you get out into the suburbs. mostly clear skies. that leads us to the beautiful

shore. just a few rain showers left around ocean city. the rest of the radar is looking dry. we expect it to be a very quiet day. despite the showers across the east, we expect temperatures to be pretty cool this morning. around 62 right now in baltimore. we have clearing skies. the dew point at 57. into the afternoon. high temperatures upper 70s to low 80s. a few clouds this morning. then clearing skies. very quiet weather pattern. you're going to like what you see in the temperatures. the national weather service confirmed two tornados touched down in the new york boroughs of brooklyn and queens. this is a video shot by a driver as one of the tornados crossed the road. twisters knocked down pow were lines, trees and caused minor damage. no injuries have been reported. powerful volcanos forced about 3,000 people to evacuate. it spewed a plume of ash 2 1/2 miles into the atmosphere yesterday. there were no reports of

injuries. the troops have been deployed to help local weather. it's the 11th anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks approaching. andrew stiff takes a look at what's holding up progress on the museum slated to be built at the manhattan memorial site. >> one year after it opened, the national september 11th memorial in lower manhattan is an emotional magnet. >> you just can't forget that day. absolutely spectacular. beautiful job. >> while most visitors seem touched -- >> makes you sit back and reflect. >> behind these reflecting pools tlshg is also simmering disappointment. >> without a museum it's a travesty. >> edie ludnick wears a broken heart necklace for her brother. >> broken, never severed. >> he was among the 658 employees at cantor fitzgerald killed in the attacks. >> without a museum, this

tens of millions of dollars. >> the museum was supposed to open this year. we understand that it has to happen. >> joe daniels tells me if construction resumes soon t museum could open in a year. >> we want it done as soon as possible. >> until then, visitors peeked behind the glass at steel beams and other artifacts that will be exhibits. >> that's one that was effective. it will be a more rewarding experience to see details that will be a more fulfilling visit. >> an echo of what 9/11 relatives say without a museum like the sky scrapers around them. the experience is incomplete. >> that was andrew stiff reporting. for the first time since the attacks there will be no special ceremonies held in washington, d.c. this year. in past years the cathedrals hosted large ceremonies on the anniversary of the attack. many included speeches by presidents and other leaders.

brought the severe weather, not only around baltimore and dc but up into new york city, where they had two confirmed tornados by the national weather service. now, looking at this cold front, we can see the rain showers still affecting ocean city, but that's about it. making some rain showers moving across the coast of jersey, all down towards norfolk, virginia. the skies are basically clearing out to the west. it's going to be a very nice weather pattern as we get into the next couple of days. i want to talk about the tropics. here we have tropical storm leslie heading north, traveling east of bermuda. this is a concern for bermuda because it's such a large storm system. hundreds of miles wide. so even though they won't get directly hit by leslie, they're still going to have some strong winds on the back side of leslie as she passes by. likely to travel north, passing by bermuda, continuing off toward the north, possibly strengthening back into a hurricane, category one, before heading toward canada. now, michael continues to be a hurricane, category two right now, but no impact to land

whatsoever. it's continuing to go northwest and then northerly, not even impacting atlantic canada. so this is good news for now. except for bermuda. they see the impact today but other than that it is very quiet farce the tropics go. it's getting quiet as this cold front moves off shore. those are all associated with that front, all along the east coast. behind it, high pressure starting to build in. this is what's going to bring fairly nice weather through the next couple of days. there's a reinforcing shot of some cold air on the way, this one with a cold front pushing across the plains. this one is a dry front. notice how there's not even any clouds associated with it. it's not going to cause precipitation in maryland but is going to ensure that we continue to have cool, pleasant and dry weather especially as that weather builds in behind it for the rest of the workweek. look at the temperatures behind that front. 48 rapid city, south dakota. 43 as you get up into international falls, minnesota, with some very chilly air starting to spill in out of canada. this is what we expect this time of year as we transition into

fall. we're going to continue to see these cold shots coming in out of the north. back towards our area, it is a little cooler. 62 thurgood marshall, 57 in wet minister, 56 hagerstown. low 50s as you head out toward oakland. today it's going to be much colder. highs in the 70s around baltimore. 78 for ocean city. mountains in the upper 60s. ocean city has a couple rain showers this morning, then they clear out. it's the mountains that could still see a couple showers with what's left over of that storm system. everyone else expected to stay dry op our forecast for tonight, mostly clear skies. going to be another chilly one, much different than what we've seen over the past couple of days where we have temperatures in the 50s to start off the day. you may just need a light jacket. that takes us to our seven day forecast of what we are expecting temperatures to be basically in the 70s and 80s for the next couple of days. i lost my seven day forecast, but we'll show you that when we come back. we expect a lot of sunshine

throughout the week. >> for many marylanders, it's a summertime staple. jumbo crabs piled high on the picnic table. that is so good. >> but this year looks like you could have to settle for the smaller ones. hurricane turned tropical storm isaac. crab lovers are searching for those big juicy crabs but not finding them these days. >> got small crabs. >> i can't find them anywhere. apparently because of the storms down south. there's no extra large. i guess they told me when i called on friday or saturday. >> $20 a dozen. medium for $302. >> most of the crabs are from maryland. general manager brendan fitzgerald said out of 50 bush shells, he only got in 2 1/2 dozen jumbo crabs. until recently most of the larger crabs have been coming from louisiana. >> the market tightened up

>> welcome back. dozens gathered to raise more awareness on drug and alcohol addiction in the celebration of those in recovery. the theme of this year's sixth annual event was join the voices for recovery. it's worth it. in maryland, more than 400,000 people are estimated to be addicted to alcohol and other drugs but only one in ten that will receive treatment. it is to prove access to treatment and advocate for greater understanding. also in baltimore, city firefighters were out in full force to educate the public about the importance of working smoke detectors. two city residents recently died within a week in homes without working smoke alarms. residents can call 311 to have a smoke detector installed in their home within two hours.

welcome to 11 news sunday morning. i'm lisa robinson. >> i'm sara caldwell. let's take a look outside. ava marie here. that was quite a day yesterday. >> we had a lot of storms that move throughed the area. even some damage reported in multiple counties including montgomery, frederick, baltimore county. you may have seen a little bit of damage. fortunately no confirmed tornados but there was a funnel reported. looking at hd doppler, this storm system is finally moving off shore, so behind it, we're expecting clearing conditions and much nicer weather. it's going to be a beautiful

pattern in to the next couple of days. the first taste of fall-like weather. even cooler to start off the day right now. we have 60 degrees at thurgood marshall and clearing skies. the forecast for today. highs in the upper 70s to low 80s. we'll have a few clouds this morning, and even cooler as we get into the seven-day forecast. >> thank you very much, ava. we begin with the severe storms that moved through, not just our area, but in washington, d.c. and virginia. the storm left behind a number of power outages. bge said around 15,000 customers lost power. they are working to restore service. crews have restored power to 14,000 customers. at last check, more than 600 remain without power this morning. take a look at this picture of a water spout on the chesapeake. it was sent to us by one local viewer alec schweitzer. we're told one of the police officers at sandy point state park saw the funnel cloud. his cruiser was damaged in the

storm but he was not hurt. during the storm in prince georges county, more than a dozen people were injured as they rushed for the exits where a county fair was being held. strong winds and heavy rains plowed through washington, d.c., knocking out power and prompting unconfirmed tornado reports. workers were out saturday evening cleaning up fallen trees and trying to repair pow were lines. reports of tornado like funnel clouds were reported in fairfax county and virginia. but actual tornados have not been confirmed. damage in some areas is extensive, with trees down on cars, windows blown out. northern virginia near washington, d.c. was also hit with severe weather saturday. high winds swept through the area. fairfax county officials confirmed a tornado touched down around 4:00. the national weather service is investigating. trees, track of lights and power lines were toppled, nearly 150,000 customers lost power. in arlington county more than 1 thoush people were enjoying a concert at the jazz festival

when they got warning to evacuate. vendors frantically tried to pack up and find shelter. >> next thing you know, bam, it just hit. didn't even take a minute. they told us to pack up. next thing we know -- >> three minutes time, literally hit. tables started flying, chairs, merchandise, people running. >> we're told one person was injured when a stage at that festival collapsed. and a reminder, you can always track storms anywhere you are. try our new i phone and android apps. an off duty hartford county police officer was killed after falling to his death from interstate i-95. charles armeto worked as a canine officer for the aberdeen police department and his death stunned the county, coming just days after the death of a sheriff's deputy. >> the aberdeen police department is mourning the loss of one of their own, officer charles amaate was killed by

what was described as a freak accident. a freak accident that's rocked this hartford county community. >> he should be remembered as a good guy. >> according to the mared transportation authority police who is investigating the case, the off duty officer was traveling with ten or 11 family members and friends in a limousine-type bus early saturday morning. a spokes person said the bus was returning from washington, d.c. when it suddenly pulled over on the shoulder of northbound i 95 near the russell street exit in downtown baltimore. authorities tell 11 news, at some point he got out of the vehicle and somehow ended up falling off this ramp, about a 47-foot fall to his death into this wooded area. >> i can't believe it. >> joy scott of bel air lived next door to the family for almost two years before the family moved out a few weeks ago. scott's four children adore the officer, who they call mr. charles. >> a great police officer, from what i could tell.

great, great neighbor. i mean, there's other people in this neighborhood that are very upset by what happened. >> armata is the second police officer to die this week. on thursday hartford county corp recall charles mccatto died in a car accident on his way home from work. armato was a husband and the father of a young girl who, according to the department, turns 1 on monday. wbal tv 11 news. the cause of the death is still under investigation this morning, and we're told funeral arraignments are being made. in downtown baltimore, hundreds of loyal ravens fanned expressed an outpouring of love and respect to art modell. the original ravens owner. m&t bank stadium was a fitting place to remember the man who moved the cleveland browns to baltimore after the colts left. >> welsh fans say they're grateful that the modell family stayed toumsto

wbal tv 11 news. city police are investigating an early morning shooting in northwest baltimore. officers were called to the 2700 block of edge comb circle north just before 2:00 on saturday morning. that's where police say they found an adult male who had been shot several times. the victim was transported to an area hospital and is expected to survive. mean time just before 2:30 saturday morning western district officers heard gunshots coming from gold street. there, officers found two adult males who had been shot. both victims were taken to area hospitals. one of the victims, identified as maurice mccoy, died from his injuries. the other victim is expected to survive. with less than two months before election day t campaign trail is heating up with both parties hoping to rally supporters in key battleground states. president obama was in florida as republican presidential candidate mitt romney made stops at virginia, each looking to ride a wave of post convention enthusiasm to victory.

off towards the east. that's what's left over of our storm system that passed through yesterday, the one that brought the severe weather to the area. many reports of downed trees. from montgomery count fi. here's what's left of it. the light rain showers still affecting ocean city all the way down towards the virginia beaches as well. but everyone else is enjoying some very dry weather. this is good news as we head to the rest of your sunday. should shape up to be pretty nice. now, off the coast though we do have to worry about leslie. now, this isn't going to make any direct impact to the coast of the yund. but leslie, such a large storm system, at least a couple hundred miles wide. it's been churning up the waters for many days. that means rip currents are possible along the east coast, including near ocean city. bermuda has bigger impacts from leslie today, as she continues to travel up towards the north. here we have bermuda right here. leslie likely to track off to the east. they're still going to see some winds maybe gusts up to 60 miles an hour. 2 to 4 inches of rain could fall

in bermuda as well. they all have dangerous rip currents and north. leslie could strengthen to a cat gour one hurricane as it gets north and eventually heads towards atlantic canada. then we have michael. not many concerns with this even though it's a powerful hurricane. category two with 100 mile per hour winds likely to decrease as he gets ahead off towards the north. no major impacts from the tropics right now. we have all the clouds across the coast. then a lot of clear skies around baltimore and dv. just a few more clouds starting to move back in to the west. high pressure dominating most of the east right now as a cold front moves off shore. we still have this area of low pressure down into south carolina. as this moves along the cold front, it's still going to produce showers and thunderstorms at least across the outer banks of north carolina and see the showers lingering for the coast of virginia. most of eastern maryland should be drying out as we go throughout the day. we have a second cold front that's going to be moving in.

this one will come through dry. it's going to reinforce that cold air through the next couple of days. so very nice quiet pattern coming up. looking at the current temperatures, already feeling chilly out there. 60 degrees at thurgood marshall, 67 downtown. we even have 50s in westminster, frederick and hagerstown. expected to be chilly for the next couple of mornings. 79 for the high around baltimore. 77 for southern maryland. ocean city 78. rain showers this morning then they clear out. it's the mountains that could still see a few rain showers move over. there's instability in the atmosphere, at least higher up. forecast for tonight. down to 60 downtown. 50s in the suburbs. that's a chilly start to the day tomorrow. but again, the afternoon hours are going to be just pleasant. the ravens game tomorrow evening. should be nice for that. 77 tuesday with sunshine. we are dry the entire work week. not even chance for rain until next saturday. >> all right. thank you, ava. forget about waiting in the checkout line or using the

welcome back to 11 news sunday morning. thanks for joining us. ava here with another look outside. are we gonna have a better day today? >> much better. the storm system that brought all the severe yesterday now moving off shore. some really cool air is moving in behind it. don't mind me. 60 degrees right now. that's the coolest it's been for ten weeks. last time we hit this temperature, june 27th. so, just an indication that fall is starting to push in as we start to see cooler and cooler temperatures in the morning hours. the dew point temperature, 57. we have a few clouds in the sky. the sun officially comes up at 6:43. we do expect clearing skies as we get into the afternoon and much cooler temperatures. it's cool in the morning but

very pleasant in the afternoon. highs from 77 to 81. if you plan to be outside today, maybe even going to the orioles game, better weather in store. much of the seven day looks this way. we'll have details in just a little bit. we've been talking a lot about weather. yesterday the national weather service confirmed two tornados touched down in new york boroughs brooklyn and queens saturday. this video was shot on the belt park way in brooklyn as one of the tornados crossed the road. the twisters knocked down power lines, trees and caused minor damage. no injuries have been reported. nicaragua's tallest volcano is erupting and has forced about 3,000 people to evacuate. the san chris to ball spewed ash 2.5 miles into the atmosphere yesterday. there were no reports of injuries or damages. troops have been deployed to help local residents. with the 11th anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks approaching, we take a look at what's holding up progress on a museum slated to be built at the

manhattan memorial site. >> one year after it opened, the national september 11th memorial in lower manhattan is an emotional magnet. >> you can't forget that day. absolutely spectacular. they did a beautiful job. >> while most visitors seem touched -- >> lets you sit back and reflect. >> behind these reflecting pools there is all simmering disappointment. >> without a museum, it's a traf trafvest travesty. broken but never severed. that belongs to my brother gary. >> he was among the employees at cantor fitzgerald killed in the 9/11 attacks. >> without a museum, this memorial dun't teach you anything. it dun't tell them anything ab what happened on that day. it doesn't tell them anything about the people who were murdered there. >> 11 years later, the bond

trading firm that lost more employees than anyone is again thriving. now in midtown. the cantor fitzgerald relief fund, led by edie lutnick helped raise millions for 9/11 families. she all wrote an unbroken bond about the politics behind delays at ground zero. >> to me, that's a missed opportunity. that's 4.5 million people who saw what appeared to be a random listing of names around two water falls. >> what's behind the delay? there's plenty of blame to go around. the city said the port authority, controlled by the governors, suddenly stopped construction nine months ago. the port said it's the city controlled memorial that owes tens of millions of dollars. >> the museum was supposed to open this year. we understand that it has to happen. >> memorial and museum president joe daniel tells me if construction resumes soon t museum could open in a year.

>> we want it done as soon as possible. >> until then, visitors peek behind the glass at steel beams and other artifacts that will one day be exhibited. >> it's more a rewarding experience to see details that would be a more fulfilling visit. >> an echo of what 9/11 relatives say, without a museum like the sky scrapers around them, the experience is incomplete. >> that was andrew cyst reporting. for the first time since 9/11, there will be no special ceremonies held in washington, d.c. this year. in past years the cathedral hosted large ceremonies on the anniversary of the attacks, many that included speeches and vice presidents and other national leaders. but this year officials say they will only be offering prayers during regularly scheduled services on tuesday. many of those prayers will be specifically for 9/11 victims and military service members. farmers markets are known for their fresh selections and

before the severe storms rolled in yesterday participants took part in a dragon boat races at the inner harbor. teams compete in an elimination race to win funds for catholic charities. good morning. let's give you a live look at ocean city right now.

this is from the grand hotel and spa. pretty quiet on the beach. we have a little bit of rain being reported and a lot of clouds. look at the waves, too. they're pretty active. we have leslie, a tropical storm, well off shore but still impacting the waters across the east coast. first i want to show you the radar, which is showing some of the light rain showers still affecting ocean city basically clearing out of the delaware beaches. then we still have that rain as we head down toward the virginia peninsula. that's associated with that storm system that came through yesterday, the one that brought several reports of weather including downed trees and even possibly a funnel cloud near sandy point state park. behind that though it's very quiet. radar is looking completely clear. it's expected to stay this way for several days pap very quiet pattern coming in now behind the latest storm system. that's good news. but let's talk about the tropics. two systems churning across the atlantic. hurricane michael, category two, winds at 100 miles per hour. that's well out to sea. not expected to impact any land.

as we mentioned, there are some concerns of dangerous surf and rip currents across the eastern u.s. even though leslie is well off shore, it's a very large storm system, at least about 300 miles across, and it's been sitting in place for one day. imagine sitting in a bathtub pushing the water up and down and you make those waves. here's what's happening here. that's what's happening with leslie. we're getting waves pushing across the coast. that's going to be a concern even in ocean city for rip currents. leslie passes to their east today for bermuda as a tropical storm. they could get some stronger winds there, at least 45 mile to 50 mile per hour winds. that's what we have to worry about, for them. lot of clouds across the coast, then clear across baltimore and dc and then just a few clouds in the mountains. high pressure in control right now but there's an upper level low pressure center that may bring showers to the mountains, including maryland, up into pennsylvania. everyone else is expected to dry out. we got a second cold front

that's moving across the plains. this one will move into the east completely dry. it's going to reinforce that cool dry air. that's going to bring very nice weather into our seven day forecast. we're starting off the day on a chilly note. 60 at the airport. i mention this is the coolest it's been since june 27th. we're seeing cooler temperatures in hagerstown. it's going to be pleasant into the afternoon. highs around 79 for baltimore, 78 in ocean city and upper 60s in the mountains. ocean city clears out, but the mountains could see rain showers, even info the afternoon. down to the00s. out in the subbeshs. could be one of the coolest nights we've seen in weeks. 70s forecast, beautiful. sunshine throughout the entire work week. highs never get mup more than 83. next chance for rain holds off until next saturday. when it comes to picking out produce farmers markets are known for their fresh selection. >> they're all known for higher prices.

welcome to 11 news sunday morning. >> our top stories in just a moment. first we'll take a look outside with ava marie. we're all talking about the weather yesterday, how crazy it was. >> we had some pretty strong storms that moved through. they brought rain, strong wind, even damage across the area. no confirmed reports of tornados just yet, but there was a funnel cloud reported by a police officer. so the national weather service may be confirming more things

today. 59 at thurgood marshall. i mentioned earlier that we were at 60 and that's the coldest we've been for ten weeks. we've gotten cooler than that. 59 the current temperature with the dewpoint at 57. we're seeing the clouds clear out behind our latest storm system. highs today will be in the 70s to near 81. beautiful conditions if you plan to be outside. there's a 9-11 race happening downtown. we will be expecting conditions for that game. that continues in the seven-day. more details in just a few minutes. we begin with severe storms that moved through, not just our area saturday afternoon, but also in washington and in virginia. >> the storm left behind a number of power outages in our viewing area. bge said around 15,000 customers lost power. they are working to restore service. so far, crews have restored power to over 19,000 customers. at last check, over 1300 remain without power this morning. and take a look at this picture of a water spout on the chesapeake. it was sent to us on you local

by a viewer alex schweitzer. we're told one police officer at sandy point state park spotted a funnel cloud. his police cruiser was damaged in the storm but he was not hurt. during the storm in prince georges county more than a dozen people were injured as they were ushered toward the exist where a county fair was being held. power was knocked out, prompting tornado reports. workers were out saturday evening cleaning up fallen trees and trying to repair power lines. funnel clouds were reported in fair fax county and virginia. actual tornados have not been confirmed. damage in some areas is extensive, with trees down on the cars and windows blown out. northern virginia near washington, d.c. was also hit with severe weather saturday afternoon. teaming rain and high winds swept the area. fairfax county officials confirm a tornado touched down around 4:00. national weather service is investigating. trees, traffic lights, power lines were toppled.

nearly 150,000 customers lost power. in arlington county, more than 1,000 people were enjoying a concert at the rosalynn jazz show when they got a warning to evacuate. vendors tried to pack up and find shelter. >> bam, it just hit. told us to go. >> tables, chairs, merchandise, people running. >> very scary. when we were all told one person was injured when a stage at the festival collapsed. and a reminder. you can track storms anywhere you are. try our new i phone and android apps and see interactive radar in full veanne. an off duty police officer was killed after falling to his death from i 95. charles ametta worked for the aberdeen police department and his death stunned the county coming just days after the death of a sheriff's deputy. here's 11 news reporter nady

rambis with more. >> the aberdeen police officer is mourning the loss of one of their own, 29 officer charles armetta was killed by a freak accident that's rocked this hartford county community. >> he should be remembered as a good guy. >> according to the maryland transpor taying authority police who is investigating the case, the off duty officer was traveling with 10 or 11 family members and friends in a limousine type bus early saturday morning. a spokes person said the bus was returning from washington, d.c. when it suddenly pulled over on the shoulder of northbound i 95 near the russell street exit in downtown baltimore. authorities tell 11 news at some.he got out of the vehicle and ended up falling off of this ramp, about a 47-foot fall to his death into this wooded area. >> i can't believe it. >> joy scott of bel air lived next door to the family for almost two years before the family moved out a few weeks

ago. scott's four children adore the officer, who they call mr. charles. >> a great police officer from what i could tell. great, great neighbor. i mean, i hope there's other people in this neighborhood that are very upset by the news. >> armatts at second police officer to die this week. charles locato died in a car accident on his way home from work. armetta was a husband and the father of a young girl who, according to the department, turns 1 monday. wbal, tv 11 news. >> the officer's death is still under investigation this morning. funeral arraignments are being made. in downtown baltimore, hundreds of loyal ravens fans expressed an outpouring of love and respect to art modell. m&t bank stadium was the fitting place to remember the man who moved the cleveland browns here to baltimore after the colts left. >> fans say they're grateful

that the modell family invited them here to m&t bank stadium to say their final good-byes to the man who brought pro football back to baltimore. purple pride ran deep, but not the way it usually does on any given sunday. ♪ >> frank sinatra played over the loud speakers as thousands of loyal ravens fans made their way to the 50 yard line to pay their respects to art modell. fans gave their condolences to the modell family and the lombardi trophy that modell held up in 2001. >> i don't know. emotional. >> emotional why? >> he's been part of baltimore football. it's great to have it back. he brought it here. sad to see him go. >> gates opened at 11:00 a.m. but john ryan was the first one in line just before 8 a.m. >> i thought there would be a big crowd here this time of morning. i guess they'll come in later. but, i had to come down from hart county and show my support

of tributes to art modell at monday's home opener and he will be laid to rest on tuesday. at m&t bank stadium, wbal, tv 11 news. >> police are investigating an early morning shooting in northwest baltimore. officers were called to the 2500 block of edgecomb circle north just before 2:00 saturday morning. that's where police say they found a man who has been shot multiple times. that victim was taken to an area hospital and is expected to survive. and just before 2:30 saturday morning, officers heard gunshots coming from the 300 block of gold street. there, they found two men who had been shot, both were taken to area hospitals. one of the victims identified at maurice mccoy, died. the other victim is expected to survive. now to the battle for the white house. with 58 days before election day, the campaign trail is heating up with both parties hoping to rally support in key

ocean city is still sitting milder. currently at 65. they had the cloud cover lasting longer. the rain showers also prevented the temperatures from dropping down. 59 degrees. that's the coolest we've been since june 27th. we're starting to get back now into the fall season. we have 50s in westminster. also frederick. 51, one of the cooler spots right now. i mention the skies are clearing out. you can see this from the satellite picture. clearing from baltimore to dc. just in the western mountains as we look toward garrett county. there's still cloud cover. there's an upper level low sitting in place in the east. this is still bringing a potential for showers in the mountains today. not so much as you head downwind as high pressure mainly going to keep our weather very dry. that storm system heading off the coast. there's a weak cold front moving across the plains. this one, no clouds associated with. that means not a lot of moisture to work with. it's going to move through as a

dry front but reinforce that cool air coming in out of canada and this high pressure system is going to bring us very pleasant weather, all the way throughout the workweek. including today, as we wrap up the weekend. 79 for the high in baltimore this afternoon. we'll see a few clouds this morning then clearing into the later half of the day. ocean city with showers early on. and that even may clear out with a high of 78 degrees. 68 in the mountains though as we have some rain showers possible even as we head later into the day. that's what that upper level low system that i mentioned everyone else expecting dry weather. now, the coast has another concern. that's rip currents and high surf. as we have our latest tropical storm leslie. this continues to led north, likely to pass east of bermuda today. it's been sitting in place for so many days, it's roughening up the waters. all along the east coast including ocean city we do have to watch out for rip currents. no concerns to the east other than the rip current. michael, our hurricane, stays well out to sea. that takes us into our seven day

i can't emphasize that enough. >> let's go over some of the tips that we have for pregnant women. schedule the dental appointments during pregnancy, including cleanings. >> yes. definitely. if there's three things i could communicate. one, see your den at this time while pregnant. two, realize that it's safe to see your dentist while you're pregnant. three, if you're on medicade or eligible for medicade, seeing your dentist is covered during pregnancy. so you're able to actually go. it's not a problem. >> it's not a problem with human fluoride and eating healthy foods that promote good oral health. >> right. i mean, as far as mom goes, you know, she should start taking care of the teeth. soon as the baby is born, go in there and start cleaning the gum area. soon as the baby has a tooth, it's okay to brush that tooth even with fluoride toothpaste.

showers. baltimore though does stay dry. highs in the upper 70s to low 80s. beautiful weather extends into the seven day. details coming up. time for a look at what's coming up on meet the press. david gregory joins us with a preview. good morning, david. >> good morning. big program. we've got mitt romney, first time on the program in the course of the campaign. and we really go through the big issues what a romney presidency would mean to the country and his view of the state of the campaign. >> incredible that we're less than two months away from the presidential election. any indication from either side post convention that their message will be tweaked at all especially when it comes to women and latinos? >> well, it certainly will in terms of outreach. pure outreach as they try to take their message forward. for mitt romney, he understands a couple of things. he comes into this after the convention as an underdog. he understands that the power of incumbency is quite strong. there's a feeling there will be enthusiasm coming out of the

democratic convention. he's got this jobs report, disappointing numbers. he wants to work that issue. to say there's is a better path that this president has not performed. essentially the message that he started this campaign with is what i think he'll end with. he's got to win on the idea that people reject the president because of the state of the economy. if he can't win that argument, he understands he can't win the race. >> and in this sitdown with mitt romney, did he reveal anything different to you that he struck you? >> yes. the one thing that will be quite striking to viewers is a disagreement with republican leaders. even his running mate over the deal that was made to extend the debt ceiling. that is to force automatic defense spending cuts. it was a window into his thinking about how to cut a deal with democrats to solve the debt problem. he is separating himself from even his running mate and other republican leaders on how to go about that. it goes to the larger point of,

>> good morning. we're starting you off with a live look at ocean city. this is our view from the grand hotel and spa. look at those waves churning about. that has to do with our latest tropical storm leslie. other than that, we have a few rain showers and the clouds still sitting over the coast. for the most part we're expecting the skies to clear out. looking at ac doppler. the rain is just starting to make its way off shore. if you're just at the beach, that's where you're seeing a little bit of rain down into virginia as well. but everybody else, dryer weather to start off the day. this is as our cold front moves off shore.

behind this cold front, we're seeing a noticeable drop in the temperatures. look at the chilly start to the day, at least if you consider it chilly in the 50s and 60s. i do want to mention leslie real quick. you can see the tropical storm churning in the atlantic. look how well off shore. we expect it to stay off shore. no impact to the east coast especially that we have rip currents possible as leslie continues to push the water to the coast. bermuda has to watch out. they could see not on strong surf but heavy rain and stronger winds. that's a concern for them today. the storm will be pulling away. i mentioned that it's cooler behind our front here in the east. it's 59 degreets right now. 55, 54 frederick. even as you look out into garrett county, 51 degrees. definitely starting to feel a lot like fall especially throughout these morning hours. the cold front is pushing up shore. we have some clouds in place across garrett county. there's instability today over

the mountain. they may see a couple showers. everyone else influenced by high pressure. that's what's going to keep the weather high for today. we have a cold front out of the plains. this moves into the east without the week. comes through dry. we don't even see clouds associated with it right now. doesn't have a lot of moisture with it. that means it's going reinforce the cool air rather than bring any thunderstorms. high pressure the big focus is the next couple days. it's going to be spectacular. we could see temperatures have dipped to 36 in international falls, minnesota. they're getting close to that freezing mark. 52 in minneapolis. even 54 in kansas city. our temperatures cool to start off the day. very pleasant into the afternoon. highs up near 79 for baltimore, 78 for ocean city and 68 in the mountains. ocean city, the rain clears out after the morning. but the mountains could see showers into the afternoon. baltimore state today, down to 60 downtown, 52 as you ged out

into the subbushes. then get near the airport, mid 50s over night. that's going to be a chili start to the day. we've got 53 tuesday, 50 on wednesday morning. may need to bust out the jackets this week. clear skies each and every day until the end of the week when we have a couple clouds. for now only a 20% chance for rain in the distant future. trying to convince a loved one that they need counselling is not as simple as an innovation like a television show. there's some very important considerations. joining me now a psychiatrist dr. mark comrade author of you need help. thank you for coming in. why did you write this sfwhook >> i wrote this book because i discovered in my own practice that there's so many people who need help that are not getting it. so many people have come to consult me, specifically not just about their own mental health problems but to get some advice and brainstorming about

how they can help somebody they love and care about to access the help they need. >> how does this help people to do that? >> my book really begins to talk about why people aren't showing up. why do we even need a book like this. the fact of the matter is, problems in mental health, problems with thoughts, feeling and behaviors are not benefitting from the treatment that they need. people are far more reluctant to show up for that kind of treatment. i talk about all the reasons why. and then i take them through a series of steps from the most encouraging conversations in which they really can learn how to actively listen and actively encourage through increasingly significant interventions and powerful intervehicle shuns that may involve tapping the unused power of their relationships. really people who care about us have the most power to convince us to get help. and this is one area in which it's very important not to remain silent, not to say, welsh

i don't want to mix in and i don't want to meddle. because it may be you are in the best position to help your loved ones. >> sometimes it's the family member that -- just the family member saying you need help. >> if that isn't happening, we have ways to help you go on to mobilize more allies, allies like clergy. allies like a person's primary care physician who could be a very important help. if necessary, i take you into the realm of mobilizing the authorities, if that's important, and i'd show you how to get the most out of it. >> you say in some ways more and more people seeking help, the help they need. lot of times people don't because mental health care is not covered under many insurance plans so they just can't afford it. >> right. sometimes that's a problem. however, the good news, is those of us in the mental health

same thing with salmon. you want to cook it a little bit more. see how quick this is. >> does it need seasoning other than the sauce you're using? >> no. because what's happened, that's going to be in the rest of the dish. over here i have some tortilla. makes it great. we'll call it fusion taco because we do asian flavors in a mexican concept. just put a little bit of peanut sauce. you can store buy it or, if you're home, you have a little bit of peanut butter. mom usually has peanut butter, right? >> always have peanut butter. >> there you go. you're a mom, right? so you know about that. >> tell me about selecting your tuna? what's the key in >> key is you got to buy fresh tuna. got to buy sushi quality tuna. >> and you're going to line the top? >> i'm going to line it with a little bit of cabbage. reminds me of soybeans. love them, right.
